The Teachers

This year we are very proud to present to you a group of teachers that we think will provide the perfect combination of what we know and love, and the unexpected that we didn’t know we were missing!

Jenn & Javier

Jenn Lee has Seattle, Washington as her home dance scene, but you can find her traveling all over the world for Balboa events. Jenn is a woman of many talents. She is an Ophthalmologist by trade, is a talented musician, holds a black belt in Shotokan karate, among many other things. In the Balboa scene she holds 1st place titles from all the top competitions, as well as being an avid social dancer.

Javier Skeets Johnson has Hartford, Conneticut as his home dance scene, and just as Jen he has traveled around the world sharing his joy for teaching and his passion for jazz dances. Javier is a rocket scientist by trade, and he brings a powerful analytical sense in his teaching, which joins the mechanics of dance and the soul of expression. He is well versed in all the swing dances, but specializes in Balboa and soul. In 2007 he founded the Lindy Circle (now Hartford Underground) where he wanted to "create a space where folks could get down and have some serious fun"!

Jenn and Javier are coming to Gothenburg for the first time, and we are really looking forward to see exactly what this exciting couple will bring!

Adam & Sanna

Adam LaMontagne and Sanna Leinonen have been dancing and teaching swing together for the past ten years. In the classroom, they emphasize a solid mix of technique and playfulness resulting in a dynamic and personalized approach to musicality and movement that is accessible to all dancers.

They are known for many things but one of these stands out more than the others, the joyfulness that they bring to the dance floor. Both on and off the dance floor, inside and outside the classroom, they contribute in the best way possible, by bringing smiles to their partners' faces.

We loved their classes so much last year, we just cant wait to get another dose!

Mel & Jo

Mel and Jo Calanglang are dance enthusiasts who have been dedicating their time and efforts to encouraging Balboa in the United Kingdom. Being familiar with lindy hop and blues, their current love is in mastering Balboa and Bal-swing - a journey in continuous learning.

You can find them social dancing and competing at various events across Europe and the United States. Their “down-to-earth” and positive attitude helps to make the classes they teach not only informative but also extremely enjoyable.

We feel utterly privileged to have this lovely couple back in Gothenburg!

The Music

Friday night - DJ Mosquito Hopkins

Friedrich der Große, aka DJ Mosquito Hopkins, Friday night -all night!

We’ve had our eyes on this talented man for a while, and this year we finally get the pleasure of his company. DJ Mosquito Hopkins is a well-known name in the Balboa scene, bringing his extraordinary shellac DJ skills to dance floors all over Europe. We can’t wait to have him get the “Forum” dance floor boiling with excited balboa dancers!

Saturday night - Andreas Hofschneider Quintet

Is there such a thing as too much of a good thing!? :) We think not, and that's why we are bringing back this skilled and charming group of musicians, truly the best band we know for Balboa dancing!

Andreas Hofschneider is a well recognized jazz clarinetist from Berlin who's reputation is highly scored among both jazz critics and swing dancers, and especially among Balboa dancers. In 2009, on Benny Goodman's 100th birthday anniversary, Andreas H. established a band as a tribute to the legend. The band's repertoire consists of Goodman's small combos from 1930's, that the AHQ-band delivers with their own style. Their focus is to bring a unique sound experience on the stage and they guarantee genuine enthusiasm at a high level.

Sunday evening - Jam session

Are you one of those awesome multi-talented people who cannot only dance to the music, but also play it yourself?! :) Want to share your passion with your fellow dancers? Well here is your chance!

Introducing Minor Swing Jam Session!

We invite you to bring your instrument along and come have a jam. There will be a space prepared for you during the Sunday tea dance. There will be a piano, a drum set and a double bass available, so anyone with those skills can also look forward to joining in!

The jam will be hosted by one of the friendliest, most humble, and most talented people we know, Henrik Johnsson from Gentlemen & Gangsters.

We hope that many of you will feel inspired to join in the jam, and we wish to make it a un-pretentious and open space for all to feel welcome to!

If you do not want to join in the jam yourself you will of course be welcome to listen or have a dance to whatever music is created :) The jam will be in the small hall, in parallel with the dancing to DJ music in the big hall.

We will offer classes on four levels. There will be three levels to sign up for, the fourth and highest level will be picked at the audition on Saturday morning.

Class Level Descriptions

Dancing Balboa feels fun and joyful. Dancing and mixing up fundamentals (such as Ad-Libs, Paddles, Crab-walks, Travel-Step and Out'n-Ins with Cross Overs, Lollies, Throw-Outs and Swivels) is fluent, until the music reaches higher tempos (+230 BPM). Higher tempos might still feel complicated and stressful, but that's fine. You know Balboa is the thing, and you are ready to continue your learning experience.

Your Balboa is joyful, creative and people really like dancing with you. Sometimes it might still be tricky with Triple Steps, different hand-shakes and multiple spins, but in general your Balboa has nice transitions from open to closed positions and back (f.ex: combo of Toss out-Crabwalks-Swivels). You know a wide variety of moves like The Dream, Hangman, Texas-Tommy to name a few… and the faster it gets, the more fun you have. Your want to become an even better Balboa dancer by adding more depth to you knowledge and understanding of Balboa dancing.

You know what makes Balboa Balboa. You are relaxed and comfortable, you inspire even dance partners who have faster tempos under control and you still look elegant. Your playfulness and styling can adapt to any dancer in the ballroom. Fast transition from multiple triples to another direction, with spins, slides or drags within, with stop'n goes or slowing down with hesitations… you name it - It is just another way for you to express your musicality. At this stage you are not just working on complex moves and polishing your style but, as a mature dancer, you are ready to take on a wide variety of learning challenges thrown at you!

We will offer tasters just before the start of the social dancing on Friday and Saturday night. All levels and party pass holders are welcome to attend the taster classes.

Friday night taster with Anni & Gašper - Balboa history dance lesson

Have you ever wondered how Balboa dancing began? Its origins are still a mystery and in discussion amongst many dancers and historians. There are many clues and suggestions as to what kind of dances contributed to the creation of Balboa. This lesson is a unique opportunity for you to learn old dance styles and experience the development of your shuffle dance.

This cultural experience will be brought to you by our lovely local teachers and inspirational dance couple, Anni & Gašper, who are dedicated and passionate about many vernacular jazz dances, especially in Balboa dance.

Welcome to this taster on Friday night at 19.00-20.00, in the small hall.

Saturday night taster with Stina & Kyle

This taster will be about connecting with each other and having fun on the dance floor. We will use the energy and the momentum in the dance to create some fun moves for you. All levels are welcome, we always adapt the class after the people in it.

Kyle and Stina started dancing together in 2016 when Kyle had just moved to Gothenburg from Vancouver. They very soon recognized what they had in common while dancing, the fun part is the most important. This was the start of a dance couple that always create exciting stuff, never plans ahead while dancing and thinks that social dancing is where you learn to dance Balboa.

Welcome to this taster on Saturday night at 19.30-20.30, in the small hall.

The weekend will start with a taster on Friday at 19:00 (social dancing starts at 20:00) and end with a tea dance on Sunday.

If you arrive early and need a place to leave your bags or hang out before 19:00 on Friday night, you are of course welcome to show up earlier, the doors will be open! (We might ask you join in the preparations though… :))

Below is the full schedule for the weekend.

Food and Drinks

The Cafe

There will be light food, sweets, tea and coffee available during the whole weekend.

We will welcome you on Friday night to “the capitol of fika in Sweden" with a buffet of very typical Swedish “fika” and food.

Saturday night will open up also for other countries’ delicious pastries, desserts, and food.

Sunday is the time to say goodbye, but not before we make sure you are filled up with a nice Afternoon Tea buffet to keep you dancing a few hours still!

Vegetarian, vegan, lactose and gluten free options will be available.

Please bring cash, and as even money as possible, as we will have limited possibilities to offer change. The price for a "Small fika" will be 40 SEK, and a "Big fika" will be 60 SEK.

The BYO bar

Because of our strict laws of selling alcohol in Sweden, we can not sell any alcohol at our event. But we want to offer you a bar anyway! So here comes the concept of our Bring-Your-Own bar.

We will offer a menu of vintage drinks, where we will make sure to provide everything needed for the drink except the alcohol. So you bring a bottle to place in the bar and then you get drinks.

The drinks that will be on offer are:

Long drinks

The alcohol that goes with these are:

The rest plus recipes we will provide!

It would of course be very fun and interesting if you would like to bring a specialty from your own country. If so please let us know by writing a comment on Facebook.

You are welcome to add ingredients for other drinks that are not on the list if you wish. Also, if you prefer wine, beer, or any beverage of your choice, it is of course up to you to share it in the bar or not!

We know from previous years that if everyone who wants one or a few drinks in the bar brings a whole bottle we will have waaay too much left over, so bringing a smaller amount or bringing a bottle together with a few friends is often a good idea! We also encourage all Minor Swing participants to drink responsibly. :)

Since this bar will depend on the improvised ingredients of you, our guests, please join and enjoy it like jazz!
